The Backstory
Though I’ve worn many hats, I’ve always been a writer. Working as a kayak guide, I spent a decade chasing summers from Washington’s San Juan Islands to Chilean Patagonia. I served two years in the Peace Corps in Paraguay, supporting subsistence farmers. I learned how to reach a broad audience under a wide range of conditions, from keeping people calm on stormy seas to talking through farming practices in a second language.
Though I’m no longer a nomad, I maintain a unique perspective on how to connect with people, which I embed in my writing. I’ve settled down on the beautiful Oregon Coast, where I help food-focused nonprofits market their programs to the community. I’m an ambitious gardener, avid forager, and amateur beekeeper. I have a passion for food and where it comes from, and I’m a subject matter expert in resilient community food systems.
Whether I’m creating compelling web copy, funding nonprofit work through grants, or crafting reports and outreach, writing is at the core of what I do.
In Other Words
Julia’s writing is always a joy to read. She cuts straight to the point with clarity and wit, while making sure every sentence is light, lovely and illuminating.
— Dave Blanchard, National Public Radio
“Julia deftly translates the vague ideas bumping around in your brain into an actual vision. She articulates them as something you didn’t have the tools to express yourself, and which amounts to more than the sum of their parts.”
— Nina Feldman, The New York Times
"Julia has a unique and impressive ability to take complicated topics and ideas and present them in a concise, clear, and understandable format. I actually enjoy reading her emails."
— Megan Deane McKenna, Oregon State University
